Marfa

Located in far West Texas, Marfa has a population just under 2000 residents and one blinking stoplight. A few hours drive into the Chihuahuan Desert lies this tiny town that is truly in the middle of nowhere.

In the 1970’s, minimalist artist Donald Judd made his home here in the high desert and was the driving force that put Marfa on the international art map. Judd wanted to establish a place where his work could be presented in a way that directly correlated with the surrounding environment. The Chinati Foundation houses many of Judd’s impressive works along with a select group of other artists’ works such as Dan Flavin and John Chamberlain, while the Judd Foundation preserves his home, studio, offices, and art works.

In and around Marfa was also the location for such American film classics as “Giant”, “No Country For Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood”. Down in this part of the country, you’ll find solitude on open desert road with sky that goes on for days.
